How to Install ChromeOS Flex on PC / Laptop
Looking to give your old PC or laptop a fresh, lightweight operating system? This video walks you through how to install Chrome OS Flex, a free and official version of Chrome OS designed by Google for non-Chromebook devices. Chrome OS Flex is ideal for older Windows or macOS machines that are slowing down, offering better speed, security, and simplicity without needing powerful hardware.
Before beginning, make sure your device meets the minimum requirements. You’ll need a USB drive with at least 8GB of storage, a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor (ARM processors are not supported), a minimum of 4GB RAM, and at least 16GB of internal storage. The video also recommends checking Google’s certified models list to confirm compatibility, though Chrome OS Flex often works on many unsupported systems too.
To get started, you’ll first install the *Chromebook Recovery Utility* from the Chrome Web Store. This extension lets you create a bootable USB drive using the official Chrome OS Flex image. Once installed, plug in your USB drive, open the utility, and select "Google Chrome OS Flex" as the manufacturer. Then choose "Chrome OS Flex" as the product and proceed through the prompts. The flashing process can take up to 15 minutes.
After flashing, restart your computer, enter the boot menu (usually by pressing keys like F12 or ESC), and boot from the USB drive. You’ll be greeted with the CloudReady 2.0 welcome screen. The video guides you to try Chrome OS Flex first without installing, giving you a chance to test performance and compatibility. If everything runs smoothly, you can proceed to a full install by signing out, accessing the quick settings panel, and selecting the install option from the bottom-left corner.
Once installed, Chrome OS Flex gives you a Chromebook-like experience with access to web apps, cloud tools, and fast boot times—perfect for modernizing aging hardware.
