How to Prevent CPU from Overheating & Shutting Down on Windows PC or Laptop (Best Method)
The Simple Power Setting Fix (Temporary/Preventative) ⚡
This simple Windows setting reduces the CPU's power and clock speed, which dramatically lowers heat output. This is a great stopgap measure but will reduce performance.
Open Power Options: Search for "Choose a power plan" in the Windows search bar and open it.
Access Advanced Settings: Click "Change plan settings" next to your current plan (e.g., Balanced), then click "Change advanced power settings."
Limit CPU Power: In the small window, expand "Processor power management."
Adjust Maximum State: Expand "Maximum processor state."
Change the value for both "On battery" and "Plugged in" from 100% to 99%. This is often enough to disable the CPU's Turbo Boost feature, which is a major source of heat.
If it still overheats, try 95% or 90% (but expect a noticeable performance drop).
Click Apply and OK.
