How to Fix PC overheating & Shutting down with simple Power Setting (Best Method)
The "best method" using power plan settings to fix PC overheating and shutting down is to limit the maximum power state of your CPU to prevent it from reaching peak performance (and peak heat).
⚠ ️ Important Note: Overheating is usually a sign of a hardware issue (like dust-clogged fans, dried thermal paste, or poor airflow). While this power setting adjustment can prevent shutdowns by reducing heat, it is a temporary fix or a last resort to make the PC usable. The fundamental issue should still be addressed.
1. Adjust the Maximum Processor State
This setting limits how fast your CPU can run, which directly reduces power consumption and heat generation.
Open Power Options:
Search for "Choose a power plan" in the Windows search bar and open it.
Alternatively, go to Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options.
Change Plan Settings:
Find the power plan you are currently using (e.g., Balanced) and click "Change plan settings" next to it.
Open Advanced Settings:
Click "Change advanced power settings."
Limit Maximum Processor State:
In the pop-up window, scroll down and expand "Processor power management."
Expand "Maximum processor state."
You will see two settings: "On battery" and "Plugged in."
Set the Value:
For "Plugged in" (and "On battery" if it's a laptop), click the percentage value and change it from 100% to 99% or a lower value like 95%.
Setting it to 99% often disables the CPU's "Turbo Boost" feature, which is a major source of high heat, with minimal performance loss.
If the PC still overheats, reduce the percentage further (e.g., to 90% or 85%) until it is stable, but be aware this will reduce performance.
Apply and OK:
Click Apply and then OK to save your changes.
2. Switch to the Power Saver Plan
A simpler, more aggressive option is to select the Power saver plan. This automatically applies a strict set of power-saving limits, including a reduction in the maximum CPU state, which significantly lowers overall heat output.
Open Power Options:
Return to the main Power Options window.
Select Power Saver:
Click to select the Power saver radio button.
Monitor Temperature:
After selecting this,
