How to Increase the Performance of your PC for Videos Games with Power Plan Settings (Best Method)
Increasing your PC's performance for video games using power plan settings primarily involves selecting or creating a power plan that prioritizes performance over power saving.
1. Select the High Performance Power Plan
The easiest and most common method is to switch to the High Performance power plan:
Open Power Options:
Search for "Choose a power plan" in the Windows search bar and open it, or navigate to Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options.
Select High Performance:
Click to select the High performance option. If it's not immediately visible, click "Show additional plans" to reveal it.
This plan typically maximizes screen brightness and prevents your PC's components (like the CPU) from downclocking or entering lower power states when idle, ensuring maximum power is always available for your games.
2. Enable the Ultimate Performance Power Plan (Windows 10/11)
For some high-end PCs running recent versions of Windows 10 or 11, the Ultimate Performance power plan can offer a small further gain, mainly by reducing latency and removing some small power-saving micro-optimizations found even in the High Performance plan.
Since it's often hidden, you may need to enable it using the Command Prompt:
Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
Search for "CMD" in the Windows search bar.
Right-click on Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator."
Enter the Command:
Type or copy and paste the following command and press Enter:
powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61
Select the Plan:
Return to Power Options (Control Panel) and you should now see the Ultimate Performance plan listed. Select it.
