How to Start Games in Windowed Mode or Fullscreen with Steam Settings (Best Method)
By default, most games will launch in whatever display mode was last used. If a game is launching in the wrong mode (e.g., windowed instead of fullscreen), the best and most universal method to force it to start in the correct mode is by using Steam's "Launch Options."
This method works for the majority of games on Steam, although some may have their own internal settings that override these commands.
The Best Method: Using Launch Options
Launch options are command-line arguments that tell the game how to behave when it first starts. You can use these to force a game into fullscreen or windowed mode.
Open Your Steam Library: Launch the Steam client and navigate to your Library.
Access the Game's Properties: Find the game you want to adjust, right-click on it, and select Properties.
Find the Launch Options: In the "General" tab, you will see a text field labeled "Launch Options." This is where you will enter the commands.
Enter the Command:
For Fullscreen: Type -fullscreen into the Launch Options field.
For Windowed Mode: Type -windowed into the Launch Options field.
You can also combine commands to get specific results, such as a borderless windowed mode, by typing -windowed -noborder (though this combination may not work for all games).
Close and Launch: Close the Properties window. The changes are saved automatically. Now, when you launch the game, it will use your specified display mode.
