How to Update Mac OS X Without the App Store or System Preference Panel
Using the command line you can update macOS / Mac OS X system software without using the App Store or the System Preference panel.
This works to install system software updates with MacOS Catalina, MacOS Mojave, MacOS High Sierra, macOS Sierra, Mac OS X El Capitan, MacOS X Yosemite, Mac OS X Mountain Lion, and any other release with the 'softwareupdate' terminal command that is available.
This is particularly useful for Mac users running Mac OS X 10.8 or later where the software update system is primarily handled through the Mac App Store, which can be avoided completely. Later in MacOS Mojave the software update feature returned back to the System Preferences "Software Update" control panel, and it still works here too.
