Jerp plays Signs of the Sojourner pt.1 (2020-06-08)
A little while back, Echodog Games contacted me to see if I was interested in checking out this game, and after giving it a look I was intrigued. There's been a heap of card games released recently, but I haven't seen any that applied a card game mechanic to dialogue (certainly none that have done it this well).
I've only seen a few of the different card types and abilities so far, but there seems to be a ton of thought put into how everything works. Having a limited deck, needing to stay compatible with the decks of the characters you're playing against throughout each trip, and needing to keep the flow going between rounds can be really tricky, but satisfying to succeed. The amount of mismatches afforded / matches required per conversation is a really nice way to handle difficulty as well. I can imagine late-game encounters be a real test of endurance with little room for error.
In some ways, the pacing is very reminiscent of end-game exposition interspersed with combat -- stuff you'd see in games like Undertale, Jet Lancer, and Cave Story. Really great balance between advancing the story and keeping the player engaged.
