King's Quest Chapter 2: Rubble Without a Cause (PS4) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
72A playthrough of Sierra Games and The Odd Gentlemen's King's Quest Chapter 2: Rubble Without a Cause, the second installment of Activision's reboot of the classic Roberta Williams PC series, released December 15, 2015. Recorded directly from the PS4 version with an X-Capture 1 USB3 capture device via HDMI at 1080p, 59.94fps.
The second chapter leaves me a bit torn. There are several different ways to approach the puzzles in this chapter, but by the time the finale rolls around, it feels a little bare compared to the fantastic first chapter. Don't get me wrong - it's excellent. The voice cast does just as spectacular a job, and the graphics are just as pretty (even though they do occasionally glitch and 95% of the episode is set inside of a single brown cave), and the challenge is more satisfying here. It just feels much more limited in scope and content. The area to play in is MUCH smaller, and the story feels somehow less personal. While I loved the characters that were introduced in the first episode, the ones that show up here as the to-be-rescued prisoners lack a lot of the agency this time that made them so fun their first time out. Wente and Bramble's story is a nice exception, and it develops their characters a fair bit, but the old couple and Amaya are pretty static and flat, which was a real disappointment.
Given Graham's epiphany in the ending, I hope that this chapter is meant as the segue between the heavy expository elements of the first and a more fully fleshed-out story arc in episode 3. Either way, it's an excellent exercise in modernized classical adventure gaming. The first episode set the bar higher than this one really had a chance to be able to reach on its own, but that speaks more to the merits of the first than the faults of the second.
