This video is about the social and economic condition of the poeple of Mauryan empire.
Social Condition:- The life of the people was peaceful and prosperous in the society. Verna and Ashram system were in practice during Rigvedic period. There were mainly four vernas Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras and four Ashrams Brahmacharya, Gristha, Vanprastha and Sanyas. Kautilya outline the duties of verna and Asram system. Most people married within their own caste and followed their patternal trade and profession. People live peacefully and harmoniously with each other and obeyed laws.
Economic condition
1. Agriculture was the basis of village economy. Many dams, canals, lakes were constructed to provide irrigational facilities. Sudarshan lake was built by chandragupta Maurya is the best example of irrigational system. Special attention was paid to cattle rearing and pastures. Forest, wild animals, mines and natural resources were considered as public property protected by state laws. heavy punishment was given wo those people who cut down green trees. Cotton, wool, Jute, Silk products was the main items for the internal and external trades. Traders have to pay taxes. Kashi, Kalinga and Madurai were the main centres of textiles. Spices and ivory goods etc. was the main items of export.
