Lancia Stratos Rally Car - Off Road Legends: The Group B WRC Superstar
14The Lancia Stratos and its successors (the 037, the Delta S4, the HF4WD and Integrale) are off-road legends like no other. Lancia’s are arguably the most successful World Rally Championship cars of all time. What’s especially impressive is that they succeeded during the golden age of rallying: the notoriously famous Group B era. Although a few great drivers dies behind the wheel of Lancia’s, the company's legacy is unrivaled in the sport with 18 WRC championships, and 3 world championships. In this video, we’ll start at the Lancia Zero, and end with its final 1992 Sanremo Rally win, followed by Lancia’s exodus from the rallying world.
There were numerous attempts at imitating the Stratos but none have marked their time like it did. At the early stages, from the time Lancia was just trying to develop a successor to the Fulvia, it had everything to win, but also everything to lose with this car. If the project failed, Lancia would have been crushed by competitors, as in the early 70’s, WRC championships were Lancia’s main source of, well, everything! Fortunately, however, this was not the case. The Stratos might still be on top of the timing sheets for years more had Lancia not been forced to withdraw it from factory competition.
