Billions of dollars has been spent on research into laser weapons. All the major powers have long had experts working on systems that could destroy an enemy without the need for bulky, expensive ammunition. A prototype US Navy system designed to take out small boats is the closest to that yet. Most western armies use a more sophisticated version of technology to train for war. Lasers have long been used to guide bombs and other weapons. The alternative is to design something that targets a weak part of the enemy.
