Learn Adobe Photoshop - Beginner Tip 3: Save Save Save

As much time as the digital age has saved, it also brings with it unique challenges. Software crashes, errors, and even power outages can erase hours of work. Saving is extremely important, and this beginner tip shows you several different methods of protecting your work.
Here's a scenario: You're sitting at your desk, working on a painting in Photoshop. You've created 76 layers and have been working for as many hours on this project as there are layers. Suddenly, the power goes out...and you realize you forgot to save. You have a deadline looming and no work to show for it now.
Unlike many other modern computer programs, one of the things that Photoshop does NOT have is an auto-save feature. This means it's up to you to remember to save your work.
1. One way to train yourself to do this is to recognize when your left hand is idle (or right, if you're left-handed). Use this time to press Ctrl+S (Command+S for Mac) on your keyboard. This is the quick shortcut for the Save option.
2. One piece of advice is to save iteratively. You can do this using the Save As option. This can help you track different versions of your work as you move toward its development. A way to do this is to save your work with a number attached, such as "Mahalo 004." This could refer to the fourth version of a project you're working on. Also, it's not a bad idea to save your work with a three-digit number attached. Sometimes, you could be saving hundreds of versions of a project, and with numbers attached you can track your progress and even refer back to an earlier version.
