About the Default Workspace

A virtual workspace is no different than a physical one. Your workflow will depend exclusively on how well organized your workspace is, especially in a program such as Photoshop. Thankfully, Adobe has kept this in mind when creating your Photoshop Default Workspace. The five presets include: Design, Painting, Photography, Essentials and New in CS 5.
Design
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Most graphic design incorporates text and is used largely within advertising. Text options in Design include:
Character Panel: Allows you to change the font size and style. Paragraph Panel: Allows you to structure the text layout.
Image options include:
Layers Panel: Graphic design can get extremely layer-intensive because it demands several visual aspects simultaneously. Channels Panel: Allows you to manipulate the entire RGB panel, or any of the individual Red, Green or Blue panels. The same can be done for CMYK, which would be used for print purposes. Paths Panel: You will be doing a lot of vector work in graphic design, because vector is infinitely scalable.
Above these sections are the
Swatches, Layer Styles, Info Panel, Mini Bridge and History panels. To reset any of these panels to their default settings, go to Reset Design by clicking the Double Arrow icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
Painting
---------------------------------------------------------------------
By clicking the Painting tab on the upper menu, you will prompt the Brush Presets window to appear. You can choose from a wide variety of brush styles to paint with.
Layers, Channels and Paths are still present, along with your Swatches and Navigator.
Additionally, you have
Tool Presets so you can group any tools you are going to use regularly into an organized panel, allowing you to select them quickly.
You will also find your
Brush Panel, so when you select a brush you can alter each specific setting per brush. You can also create new brushes from scratch and save them for future use.
When painting, you may want to adjust the Color of each Swatch accordingly. To do this, simply click on Window in the top menu and then choose Color within the menu. Drag the Color panel into the Swatches panel and they will both live together in the same panel.
Photography
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Click the Photography tab in the upper menu and you will see the Histogram tab open up in a panel on your right. The Histogram will tell you everything you need to know about the color of your chosen image. Specifically, it conveys all of the color ratios within the image. The Navigator and Info panels are still present.
Further down you will see the Adjustments tab containing all of your adjustment presets.
The Masks function was explained in an
earlier lesson. The bottom panel remains the same: Layers, Channels and Paths. In addition you will find the Clone Source Tool (a rubber stamp icon) which helps you remove things like red-eye in photographs. See the Clone Source Panel tutorial for more information on this function, such as learning how to duplicate areas of your image. You will see Mini Bridge and History are still available.
A great asset to photographers is the
Actions Panel, which will let you automate various actions. For example, if you are doing something over the course of 40-50 images, come into this panel, record your actions, open up your next image, play around and then you can continue working.
Later on, at a different time, you can bring up the File menu in the Menu bar to select Automate, followed by Batch Automate and this will draw from the Actions Panel.
Essentials
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a combination of painting and design. You have Color, Swatches and Style, as well as Adjustments and Masks. In addition, you still have your standard Layers, Channels and Paths available. This gives you a basic layout to start with, which you can then customize by coming up to the Window menu and choosing the various options therein.
