About the Filter Menu
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Much of the power of Photoshop comes from its Filter Menu. Inside the Filter Menu you can select and edit various tools. This is the most involved menu Photoshop has. There are 14 sub-menus within the Filter Menu. Each item on these sub-menus is going to produce entirely different results.
Filter Gallery
---------------------------------------------------------------------
You find the Filter Gallery third from the top in the Filter Menu. Once you select this, your image is going to open in a new window. On the right side of the window there are six tabs, each one corresponding to one of the filter's sub-menus.
You can choose from Artistic, Brush Strokes, Distort, Sketch, Stylize and Texture. If you open any of these options from the Filter Menu directly, it will simply open up the Filter Gallery option. If you open any of the galleries, a visual reference will open showcasing each of the options available. The options are represented by a small thumbnail of a sailboat in the style of the filter. This should give you a basic understanding of what to expect when you select each filter.
Pick one of the presets here and your image will automatically be transformed using the default settings of the filter you have chosen. On the far right of the screen are the setting's Adjustments. Click the sliders and move them around until you achieve the look that you want. Once you're done, click the "Okay" button to apply your new settings to your main image.
Blur and Sharpen
---------------------------------------------------------------------
These filters are used to control the overall sharpness of your image. If you want a softer image, use Blur. If you want a more crisp, clear image, choose Sharpen. Within these categories there are several effects, as well. You can simulate Motion, Lens Filters or even a Lens Blur.
Render Menu
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Render Menu allows you to generate some interesting shapes and patterns with the Fibers, Clouds and Different Clouds options. The Noise Menu will allow you to generate noise patterns within your image and Pixilate breaks your image down into smaller pieces. The Liquify Tool allows you to select any point on an image and warp or "melt" it by dragging the cursor in various directions. You can have a lot of fun distorting images in this manner to achieve a surreal effect.
