Lenovo IdeaPad Y410p - Thief Performance Test (Max Settings, Low SSAA)
I'm don't know why Thief got a low score among critics, but I can see how it plays like Dishonored like everyone says. In that regard, Thief is more stealth than action -- severely punishing the player when discovered. I can't also say for sure since I've only reached the third or fourth chapter, but Thief generally takes place at nighttime. It may be boring to some to just avoid people and take stuff without being noticed (and possibly do this the entire game), but I can see the thrill of it.
Anywho, for those who have the Y410p and are interested in the game, it seems it's fairly playable at max settings (depending on what's "playable" to you), with low SSAA. The in-game benchmark says the laptop's averaging around 26 fps (max around 41), but the test only included a hectic scene. VRAM utilization is about 98% (2013 MB), so I guess you'll need 2 GB if you want max textures in this game. You spend a lot of time on rooftops and beams, and this is what I've seen from my playthrough:
Framerates:
Range - 23 to 58 fps
Average - 39 fps
Maximum Operating Temperature (1 hour of gaming):
CPU - 85 to 88 °C
GPU - 87 °C
Also, I've found a tool that can display the active framerate while recording, and it takes advantage of Intel's Quick Sync Video technology. This tech is exclusive to select Intel chipsets, increasing video decoding/encoding exponentially. From my experience recording Thief, the performance hit is about the same as recording with Fraps: up to 10 fps reduction. The plus side is ending up with a more reasonable video output size (4+ GB for 15 minutes). The downside? It uses H.264 compression. While it's a widely-used standard (YouTube, Blu-ray, HD streaming, etc.), it can cause distortion and blockiness in some scenes, as seen in one part of this Thief recording. Also, wish there were more calibration options in the tool.
