Let’s Play BG2 EE #142: On Loopholes, Vagueness and Technicalities
Whenever you’re given a task to perform by someone, most of the time you’re asked to prove that you’ve done what was asked of you before you’re given your reward. Sometimes you don’t need to directly prove anything as your success is readily apparent but most of the time you’ll need to hand something over. Whether it’s an item you’ve been paid to retrieve, the head of an enemy, a treaty signed by a neighbouring lord, a person you’re escorting or any number of other things, arriving with it is as requested is a sure sign you’ve done as was asked of you.
...Or is it?
Sometimes the wording of the request is such that you don’t actually need to do what’s asked of you, especially when the quest given only wants you to bring something to them as proof of your deed. It might be heavily implied or directly stated that they want you to recover the item in a particular manner, but if they don’t demand enough evidence to verify that you’ve accomplished what they wish, then you can take full advantage of that. Poorly worded agreements are riddled with loopholes that can and often are used to null said contracts. While this practice is typically used by villains, a cunning hero can thwart the scheme of a powerful enemy using the exact same method.
I would not recommend trying this against lawful fiends, however. Even the most intelligent and savvy mortals pale in comparison to the masters of legalese that those of the nine layers are.
