Coal and iron are fine rewards for delving into the ground and while some people eventually turn their nose up at them once they reach a certain point of the game, I for one never say no to having more of either. Iron has uses far beyond weapons and armour and coal is always handy to have around. Both give you experience – coal when mining, iron once smelted – which is useful for the many enchants you’ll be eventually putting on your main equipment, yet another reason not to ignore them as you go mining.

There are many other riches beyond them, however. You’re likely to encounter gold first, used primarily in the creation of clocks, powered rails and a type of pressure plate. You can also use it for weapons and armour and while it’s the best for adding enchants, it’s poor stats outweigh that minor benefit. Then there’s redstone, essential for redstone circuits and all the complicated things that can be made by them which I’m rubbish at replicating. There’s also lapis lazuli, a source of blue dye and used in the enchanting of books on an enchanting table. All of these things are great to mine whenever you find them, but they’re not the true prize when you go mining underground.
