I spoke last time about how one should never take certain enemies in D&D lightly due to their resourcefulness and sheer overwhelming power. Not rushing into a situation before you’ve gathered all the information you can about it and sufficiently prepared is wise, but things are rarely that simple. You don’t always have the time necessary to ready buffs and often you won’t know there’s an encounter ahead until it’s upon you, the enemy ambushing you and seizing the initiative.

Then there’s the times when all the readiness in the world won’t be enough. Some enemies are just so quick and powerful that your countermeasures crumble in moments, the party overwhelmed and defeated before combat has even begun. There’s always someone bigger than you after all and sometimes, they’re so much larger as to make your might insignificant.

When these are scripted events in a game, they’re rarely fatal unless you’ve gone and done something very foolhardy despite the warnings not to. The same applies to a tabletop session, though they can be the hallmark of a DM intent on railroading the players into following the plot. Done well, it reminds an overconfident party that they’re still vulnerable and that their enemies are strong. Done poorly and it can shatter the immersion of the story and build resentment between the players and the dungeon master.

You may be wondering why I’m discussing this in the description of this video, one where we do a little more exploring of Ust Natha and the Underdark. All will become clear in time.
