Let’s Play BG2 EE #144: When Facing a Lich, Always Over-prepare
77We may have faced and overcame multiple liches in this game. Be it through striking with the perfect spell to nullify their powers before they can attack, overwhelming them with overwhelming might or by stripping away their defensive buffs and then striking while they’re vulnerable, each one has fallen to Terri and the party. You’d think that by now I’d look at the prospect of battling a lich as easy but that’s one thing I will never, ever do.
Alongside dragons, other adventuring parties and mighty beings of the outer planes, high level spellcasters are a threat that you should never underestimate. They have at their disposal mighty incantations, be they arcane or divine. They can render themselves all-but invulnerable, strip away the enchantments on your equipment and reflect your spells back at you. They’re capable of turning you into toads, stone or dust. They can trap you in a magical maze, banishing you to a far flung plane or imprison you forever deep within the earth. They can wipe out entire groups of foes with fire, lightning, implosions or howling banshee wails. All this is just what arcane casters are capable of, those most likely to the liches. Divine casters are just as formidable, if not more-so and if you ever face someone capable of casting both at the same time, beware: you’re dealing with someone far deadlier than a wizard and cleric combined.
It’s for this reason that, when I know I’ll be facing a lich, I’ll always be over-prepare. It’s better to cast far more buffs than you need then be obliterated by their supreme magical might. Resting to regain any wasted spells after the dust has settled sure beats being the settling dust.
