The event based quest system in the Baldur’s Gate series is rather robust, but not without flaws. Where it can come apart is when you perform steps before the game presumes you will, resulting in dialogue and things going on that doesn’t make much sense in context. It’s even confusing if you’ve seen instances of the developers taking such occurrences into consideration like they did with the Trademeet quests, providing unique dialogue that makes everything fit neatly together regardless of how you do things. I suppose in that quest it was very likely you’d stumble upon the place the djinn would send you do entirely by accident, but the same could easily be done with the Umar Hills; we in fact did just that, picking up only the first few steps of the quest there before we abandoned it to seek out Valygar.

Despite the strange dialogue quirks that can come from doing things out of order, I’ve not known a quest to become impossible to complete because of it. That doesn’t mean you don’t have to sometimes do fiddly things to trigger progress in the quest to remedy things however, as you’ll see in a future video. For now, we’re going to act like we’ve only just arrived to Umar and go searching for information about the goings on in the area, the better to glean clues as to what’s really happening.

Once we decide to take up the quest proper from the leader of the village, however… Let’s just say things get a little bit silly from there.
