Let’s Play BG2 EE #99: Exploring the First Floor
Each of the levels of Watcher’s Keep are one large puzzle that you have to solve before gaining access to the level below. The puzzles are self-contained and the first floor starts things off easily with a relatively simple conundrum to solve, but that doesn’t mean you can come straight to here from the very beginning of chapter two. Even the first floor has challenging encounters however so it’s best to wait until you’ve got a few levels under your belt and better equipment before venturing to this entirely optional content.
The puzzle of the first floor is a combination of an item hunt followed piecing together how to use said items correctly. Nothing is exceptionally well hidden, though there are easier ways to get some of the knowledge provided you’re thorough with your exploration and connect the dots between the written clues you uncover. This floor reminds me a lot of one of the parts of the forgotten temple in the Umar Hills though I doubt they drew their inspiration from that; the structure of this part of Watcher’s Keep can be seen in many other games that came before this one, with Lands of Lore 2 coming to mind first. There are likely other examples from just my let’s plays alone and if we looked for it among the fantasy genre of novels, we’d be here all day.
