Um, right. So I was going to do another 7DRL 2012 video, but it turns out I'm scraping the bottom in terms of games that either require emulation/preparation (which I will set up this weekend) or games that are inexplicably not working even though they're supposed to. Instead, we get this game!

ChessRogue begot a very different approach to roguelikes. It was originally developed back in 2005, before the seven-day challenge had really taken off: this is when roguelikes were almost directly assumed to be dungeon crawlers with RPG elements (crucial necessities aside). ChessRogue, on the other hand, kept things like randomized level construction and permadeath, but took a very different direction using what is often called the "1HP system". Games where death is instant require that the position to your enemies be the most important factor in combat, and what better way to create such a system than one that is well-known!

While we haven't seen a roguelike with the 1HP system gain great popularity, they're at least more common. Let's take the time to see one of the earlier designs.
