We make it to the final of the Doom Alphas, meaning it is the last obstacle between me and freedom. With one more to go, I decide to finally rip off the band-aide and check out this version.
We have quite some amazing news, it is only 3 levels! Of course, it is 3 levels where you have to actually fight enemies using clunky default controls you cannot change. Expect me to struggle... expect me to struggle a lot.
E1M2 is the first level and pretty much is a version with a bunch of annoying elevators and no Chaingun. Treasures are thrown about in these levels, though they are pointless, as is the lives system. Most of the pain is near the end, where I must run across slime without getting stuck on walls (not an easy feat in this version).
E3M5, the second level, is pretty much what takes up most of my time during this playthrough. It happens to be quite broken, with several areas that I correctly guess are impossible to access without noclipping into them (stay turned for Part 2 for that). It also features Lost Souls which are a bit more painful than I remember, as well as a noticeable lack of armor or Barons. Surprisingly, Cacodemons turn out to be rather simple to defeat if you can get used to strafing in this version, but Demons remain nightmares. Especially that one that requires you to punch him.
Oh, and you get to see some interesting effects on the screen. Picking up a radioactive suit does absolutely nothing, but picking up an invisibility will give you the invulnerability appearance for a bit of time. Meanwhile, the berserk is entirely useless. We also get to see the Light Amplification visor, which tints the screen green, one of the most useless things ever. It does mean that we end up with a video where I end up shooting things for a great length of time with only one color on the screen. If you love the color green and become annoyed with Doom's prevalent usage of other colors, this video might be for you!
