You may not think we can do much with the broken piece of the payphone that we have, but the many adventure games that I’ve played have taught me otherwise. This seemingly useless item is the thing that will set off a chain of events which will not only get us more items, but it and the items we get by using it will solve puzzles that net us even more items still to solve even more puzzles and so on. These new items will also net us a lot of new dialogue from using them on other things in our inventory and the things around us, which is an added bonus.

Of course, it could be that the item we’ve just received won’t help us achieve anything, but surely that’s not the case. After all, we’ve yet to come across a single item so far that hasn’t been useful for something. Each one has helped us progress in some small way, even the ones that were a part of our inventory for such a fleetingly short amount of time. Indeed, I would hazard a guess that there’s no truly worthless item in the game and I’ve seen no evidence to prove otherwise.
