Let's Play Make a Good Mega Man Level Contest - #09: Wily Fortress (1/3)
In this part, I complete the first three Wily Fortress stages. What's unique about these stages is that one stage (barring the final one) was created by one judge each. So, we get to see how they fair in terms of level design and unique mechanics (if any). And just like any fortress stage, there's a boss battle at the end.
First up is SnoruntPyro's stage. It's a nice and polished Wily intro stage, with a gradual ramp of challenges and some tight spots with the spikes. I did like the gimmick of turrets firing back pellets and later charged shots back at you. Plus, the forced scrolling segment near the end was unique. The main highlight for this stage was the boss battle. Here, we face a Doc Robot who can morph into any of the eight Robot Masters from MM3 and use their attacks. Meanwhile, enemies who originated from MM3 also spawn in. It's quite a unique fight, and reminds me a lot of the Archive fights in "Research Facility". But main complaint here would be that, it's rather not outstanding. It works and is fun, but is mostly "there",
Second up is Cheez8's stage. This one, although it didn't have any new gameplay mechanics, is a rather polished junk and fire themed stage. The challenges used in this level ramp up the difficulty, and would fit as a fortress stage in a classic MM fangame. The time-bomb and descending segments were my favorite ones. Even the boss follows this trend. The Giant Tackle Fire uses three fire-based attacks from previous MM fangames while fireballs rise up from the lava below. But, it isn't too much of a nuisance to deal with. Overall, I liked this the most out of the three.
Third up is Duvi0's stage. Although the stage design could use some work in some places, I quite enjoyed this stage's gimmick. Here, in most places, if you destroy an enemy, several obstructive barriers will appear, making traversing the stage much more difficult. Combined with the precious spike jumps in certain places, your best bet is to avoid combat entirely. This level really changed up how I usually play MM levels. I don't usually play MM games pacifistly, so this was a nice change of pace. Plus, the boss was also unique, as it was a combination of a forced pacifist (immune to all forms of damage) and an enemy-based Wily Archive battle. Really, the uniqueness of the stage saved it from mediocrity. Without the gimmicks, I would place this into Tier 2. With them, Tier 3.
