Let's Play Make a Good Mega Man Level Contest - #03: Tier 3 Levels (1/2)
3In this part, I complete the first two stages in Tier 3. All the levels here are at least average.
First up is Mitcheddar93's "Wily Combo", a remix of Mega Man 1's Dr. Wily Fortress stage 1 with 16-bit graphics and better level design. This is certainly challenging and fun to go through, but the foreground can sometimes be hard to distinguish from the background.
Second is Thoron's (AKA me) "Napalm Forest and Caves", a remix/remake of Napalm Man's stage from Mega Man 5.
To summarize my comments in the video, I quite enjoyed the original stage, but I felt it was too short and did not explore its gimmicks enough. Plus, I felt it needed something more to stand out from being just an enemy-based challenge stage. I also wanted the stage to have better replayability. Thus, I made an overall longer level with two main paths that the player could go through. I included the springs and floating platforms from MM6, to add to the enemy-based challenges of this stage. I also took some inspiration from other stages to spice things up.
In retrospect, I should have added two or three more screens to better teach the player about the floating and falling platforms. Moreover, the stage did drag on near the end as I merged several elements of a third path into the two. Plus, during the first route split, there would have been an easter egg at the end of the left corridor. Really, I wanted to make this stage more transformative, but I ran out of time because of real life work.
Alas, I feel the judges' comments are fair and understandable. I quite enjoyed building this level, and will participate in the next MaGMML competition.
