The 6th episode, in which I discuss why so many eastern MMO's fail when they're ported to the west.

Welcome back to Let's Play BDO! In this episode the topic is: Differences in Western and Eastern Gaming

West:
Everquest
Ultima Online
Runescape
WoW
Guild wars (1 and 2)
Eve
Dark Age of Camelot
ESO

East:
Final Fantasy XIV
Maplestory
Ragnarok
BDO
Blade n Soul
Flyff
Tera
Archeage

West is more about the destination
East is more about the journey

Infrastructure
Culture (Together vs Individual)

How they see games
- West: Sees them as a battleground where all are equal
- East: Any advantages you have can be used. Real money is to be used. Will be mocked if bad though.
Eastern gamers are more prideful than western gamers. Will support their teams more, but lay into them even harder if they lose. The successful are venerated and the losers disparaged and forgotten. This same philosophy carries into their games. Using p2w is fine as the money was earned. Just make sure you're winning with it. Doesn't mean east likes p2w in general, but it's much more accepted there.
Western gamers are more individualistic. Belief that anyone can be the best if they just try hard enough (A modern american dream?). Want a fair playing field between all players, dislike cash shops and most campaign against p2w in games.
