Let's Play New Super Mario Bros. - Part 2: Mini, Bouncy, and Easy
Also known as "I Hate the Mini Mushroom: The Episode". But more on that later...the important point is that we now move on to the second half of World 1, where we take on 1-4, 1-5, and the World 1 castle. 1-4 is noteworthy for introducing possibly my least favorite powerup ever to grace the Mario series...the Mini Mushroom. It makes Mario extra-tiny, which allows him to jump much farther and run on water at the expense of dying in one hit and having to ground pound to defeat enemies. The real problem with it, though, isn't so much its capabilities (though those can be rather annoying) as the fact that it's required for WAY too many secrets in this game, most of which are not actually in levels that contain the powerup, which means you have to go back to a different level (usually this one because it's the easiest to get one from) and grab one. I spend a LOT of time ranting about the Mini Mushroom in my commentary for this episode, so...fair warning. Stupid mandatory rare powerup usage...*grumble grumble* ...Oh, right, 1-4 itself. Well, it certainly is a level. It's another grassland one, maybe slightly harder than 1-1, and it mainly just introduces the (bleeping) Mini Mushroom and Goomba-generating pipes, which will continually spawn enemies. 1-5 is another athletic level, this time centered around a different type of mushroom: the BOUNCY one! Bouncy, bouncy! Yeah, this one can be rather fun, though the timing for pressing B to make it bounce you higher is fairly strict. We also see SMB1-style scale platforms for the first time in this level. The World 1 castle is pretty straightforward...the main gimmick is tightropes, which you can walk and even bounce on but which Mario WILL fall off if you stay in the same place too long. Do not get dumped into the lava. The boss is Bowser, who fights just like he did in the original Super Mario Bros...by which I mean that he walks back and forth and breathes fire at you, and to defeat him, you have to perform the amazingly difficult and complicated task of jumping onto the conveniently-placed moving platform, over Bowser, and onto the switch, sending him into the lava for his flesh to be melted off. (Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy...) Jeez, I thought Bowser Jr. was pathetic, but I can see where he gets it. Of course, if that were enough to get the Princess back and defeat the Koopa Troop, this would be a very short game, so Bowser Jr. runs off with her again. Off, that is, to World 2, which we will get to in the next episode.
