Let's Play New Super Mario Bros. - Part 9: Beware the Forest's...Everything
We have quite an assortment of level types in today's episode. We start things off with the tower stage, which has a gimmick that isn't exactly rare in 2D platform games: there is lava below, and it is constantly rising! We must get to the top before it does, though that is made slightly more difficult by needing to stop and get the star coins and some moving blocks getting in the way. As far as "rising hazard" stages go, though, this one really isn't all that bad. 4-4 puts us back in the forest, where we are reintroduced to Wiggler, who first showed up in Super Mario World and is almost exclusive to this stage in this game. After that comes the ghost house, which still doesn't throw anything too nasty at us, though it is slightly more complex than World 3's (probably less strict with the timing, though) and introduces a new enemy and platform type. Also, the first star coin is kind of easy to pass by inadvertently; I did exactly that, and while I didn't have to play through the level an extra time, I did have to play through another one an extra time, because the third star coin and secret exit in this one require a Mini Mushroom, while the first coin is impossible to get if you're mini. Then we come to 4-5, which is underground, contains another new and unique kind of platform, contains mushrooms (!?), and has you blowing up walls with Bob-ombs. Blowing things up is fun, but be careful what you blow up in this level and where, lest you screw yourself out of a star coin or two.
