Let's Play New Super Mario Bros. - Part 3: Ups and Downs in the Dunes
We're almost ready to move on to World 2, but not quite yet. There is some unfinished business in World 1, mainly one more level to do: 1-A. It's sort of a not-really-secret secret level, accessible by simply paying 5 Star Coins to open a new path on the overworld. 1-A is actually an underwater level, and, unfortunately, an auto-scrolling one at that. It's not that difficult, though it does have a unique enemy, sharks that the level constantly generates from the right side of the screen. And can I just say that I don't care for the swimming physics in the New Super Mario Bros. games? I know underwater physics can be tricky to get right, but even among Mario games, I think at least Super Mario World did a better job on them. And I think that after this episode, I'll be doing the "secret" stages before the castles; it seems to make more sense that way.
And since 1-A didn't take very much time at all, I decided to start on the next area. World 2 is the desert world of the game...actually, it's the desert world of ALL of the NSMB games. The levels here are generally still fairly basic, but they do throw in a few new enemies and gimmicks. 2-1 is a very straightforward level that introduces you to Pokey, Spiny, and desert levels in general. 2-2 is apparently in some kind of oasis (there's no water, though), and it marks the first appearance of Lakitu in this game (and only? I don't think he showed up in any other levels, but I'm not sure...). His A.I. can be a bit weird. 2-3 is a sewer level, one of only a very few in the game. It's also a bit of a maze, albeit not a particularly dangerous one, and it has a secret exit to find.
(Edit: Okay, yeah, I was thinking of New Super Mario Bros. Wii in that one part...6-3 in that game IS a sewer level.)
