Let's Play New Super Mario Bros. - Part 4: It's Flat and Immense...
Ugh...okay, apparently Lightworks wants to be a pain in the butt and screw up my audio (on top of the already annoying things it does like output huge files that are always 720p regardless of what the resolution was supposed to be, requiring me to fix them with another program, and take several seconds to perform even simple actions like moving the playback cursor). So, for now, back to Windows Movie Maker it is, I guess...at least the only video-editing tasks I really need right now are combining, trimming, and adding transitions...
Anyway, grumbling about shoddy software aside, we are on to the second half of World 2, or at least most of it. In this episode, we cover 2-4, 2-Tower, 2-5, and 2-6. 2-4 is another desert level, and it introduces a rather interesting gimmick: sections of ground that swell up when switches are hit. Beyond that, this stage also has the standard Mario enemies (Goombas, Koopas, and Piranha Plants) as well as introducing Hammer Bros. Those guys are generally tricky, but they're pretty rare in these games. There is also an inexplicable watery cave area...and a secret exit that requires the Mini Mushroom (*grumble grumble*). The World 2 tower introduces a couple new kinds of platforms, though it's a bit on the convoluted side for a tower stage and has a fairly strict time limit. (I seriously have to wonder if it was really supposed to have 400 "seconds" instead of 300...) Oh, and Bowser Jr. is there too...or at least I think he was; I blinked. 2-5 is a desert level with a unique...enemy, I guess you'd call it, even though they only hurt you if they land on you. They're basically animate stacks of blocks. Fire Snakes and Boomerang Bros. (or at least one of them) also make their first appearance here...and possibly their only one? I can't immediately think of any other levels that have them, but I'm not sure. 2-6 is an athletic level, one of those "not really auto-scrolling but might as well be" types, where you spend most of the level on a large, constantly-moving platform and avoid a lot of Piranha Plants and Venus Fire Traps. This is where the fact that enemies actually interact with moving platforms in this game becomes a major factor in things, since the level can and will deposit Piranha Plants onto your platform, giving you less room to maneuver.
