Let’s Play Rocket Power: Beach Bandits (GBA) - Finale: Less Racing, More Monkeys and Disappointment
After beating Golem Jr.’s high score for his last arcade game, he runs off to his ocean fortress and attempts to destroy Ocean Shores with a tidal wave (because apparently he cares more about his gaming cred than the fact that we’ve destroyed three of his facilities, unlike in the console version of the game), prompting us to chase him down and finally put an end to his plans.
Though what I find really fascinating is just how different the console and GBA versions of the game are when it comes to the final area. In the console version, the player is instantly warped to Jr.’s sea fortress- no work to get there required- and have to beat him in four races with different vehicles that boil down to more or less just holding the acceleration button. However, in the GBA version, the player has to complete a level that has them navigating the waters around Ocean Shores in a yellow submarine (insert Beetles joke here) before having to go through the fortress itself and actually fighting Jr., who actually proves to be the hardest boss in the game due to how he’s airborne most of the time, making it where you can’t just combo him. Plus, it doesn’t help that before you can fight Jr., you have to defeat a monkey piloting a mech (because when I think of the 90’s kid-version of Dr. Evil, I think of a monkey in a robot suit) and aren’t given any healing items.
Though the game’s not over yet, because after watching the credits roll, we’re warped back to the arcade and are told that we’ll get an epic reward if we can beat harder versions of all of the games, only to find out that the “prize” is just disappointment.
In regards to my next Let's Play, the first episode will be uploaded this Friday, 5/14/21. Though in the meantime, I will be uploading two mashup videos: one tomorrow, 5/11/21, and one this Thursday, 5/13/21.
