In this episode we find Guardania in ruins from the Runefaust assault. Speaking with the townspeople, we hear their tales of terror, save for the old man in the bar. He introduces himself as Gort, and feels inspired after the battle to join our quest. We then head for the castle, where Kane of Runefaust claims he's taken the treasure of Guardania, and that the town is now meaningless to him. Lord Varios is gravely wounded from protecting the king from Kane, and succumbs to his injuries before our very eyes. Varios's daughter Mae rushes Kane in an attempt to avenge her fallen father, but is easily brushed aside by the powerful villain. We rush to the king's aid, but he too is gravely wounded, and with his dying breath charges us to find the key to the Gate of the Ancients, and to stop whatever Kane is planning. Still hungry for vengeance, Mae joins the Shining Force, and together with our new recruit, we gather supplies in preparation for the journey to Alterone. Dangerous monsters block our path, so with our ever-increasing army, we prepare to fight our way forward.
