Let's Play Spec Ops: The Line | Chapter 7: The Road | Test | Ambush
Welcome back to Spec Ops: The Line, a soft reboot of the Spec Ops franchise that changes up the formula, turning a series that was originally meant to be a tactical shooter into a narrative masterpiece. While the game still has remnants of its Tactical Shooter roots, the gameplay focuses far more on the story of Captain Martin Walker, who enters a war-torn Dubai in order to rescue a man he admires, John Konrad, after an evacuation mission involving the 33rd Infantry goes awry. What they find waiting for them in Dubai sets the stage for an explorative and less-mentioned side of warfare that is seldom seen or talked about.
Wading through the remnants of the 33rd, Walker, Adams, and Lugo find themselves in a chamber where bodies of soldiers have been tied and interrogated before being summarily executed using White Phosphorus.
That is when John Konrad, the man they had been seeking all this while himself, speaks through a radio placed on a lectern, explaining how making an example is essential in keeping order. He explains how Dubai would have been far worse a place without his intervention and insists that he is essential to maintaining peace in the succumbed city, no matter how bad things may seem.
With this discovery, Walker decides to play along with this madman's demands.
They walk ahead to find themselves in front of two hanging people, still alive. Snipers have their scopes trained on them, and John Konrad gives Walker a test. He is to choose who deserves capital punishment between a civilian who stole water, a capital punishment under his regime, and a soldier who was sent to apprehend him, but ended up taking the lives of five innocents in the process.
Walker chose to eliminate the soldier for his sins were more grave, and Konrad set the civilian free.
The team was a little torn about the entire affair and wanted to find a way out, but before any decision could be reached, Konrad sprung an ambush upon them, giving the 33rd a chance to get retribution for the massacre at the hands of Walker and his team.
As they desperately fought tooth and nail, luck took their side in the matter and sent a sandstorm their way, forcing the Damned to break their aggression and giving Walker & Co. a chance to seek shelter and solace amidst the hell that was now Dubai.
And that is where Walker promised Konrad that he would have his retribution.
Here is how Walker got ambushed on the Road:
