The choice about whether or not to go to Gryphon first doesn't affect any achievements. Just know that you'll need his help no matter what you pick.
The dialogue choice with Matt is a no-brainer; just trust him no matter what.
Boss: Team Dragon [ 32:10 ]
This time, Matt joins Team Dragon to give them a full party. He's not as strong as Dodson, but he's still surprisingly strong for someone with such high speed.
After the battle, pick the second choice to increase Dodson's relationship value.
Before entering the plant building, be sure to get hit by lightning at least once. Yes, I know this defies all gaming common sense, especially for those who played "Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World." Usually, avoiding lightning unlocks content. However, this is necessary to get Kat to appear in the plant building for recruitment.
Boss: Lost of the Lightning [ 54:59 ]
If you were lucky enough to get a thunder ring from Gary, this could prove useful against the boss.
Save before you leave the lightning strike area, since the next dialogue choice can determine whether or not Matt temporarily joins.
