In this part we explore the second floor of the Elden Grove in our continual hunt for the third piece of the Staff of Chaos. Having made it past the massive hedge maze outdoors, we find ourselves in an underground dungeon once more.

The level starts off pretty simple as I wander around and kill a bunch of Rats, then suddenly a Riddle appears with the threat that I will be eternally locked in here if I guess incorrectly. My luck with riddles continues and I solve it pretty easily, which is still amazing for me since I am pretty terrible with riddles.

After that it is just the normal dungeon trek, now with absolute black textures that remind me of the set from Aliens. We have some minor variety with enemies, but it mainly consists of Rats and Zombies. As we continue further into the dungeon, we start seeing Wraiths more and more predominantly until we start seeing packs of two everywhere. Needless to say, this place starts out easy, then gets extremely painful by the end. Luckily, this floor seems pretty generous with raised surfaces, as we tend to need all the health we can get to survive every battle.

As we map out the dungeon a bit more, it starts revealing an important truth about the design of the second floor. The entire dungeon is made up of several different sections divided from one another by a long river. While we could spend a lot of time wasting our Stamina and slowly going down each portion of the waterways, we find an extremely welcome alternative. Boats!

Boats are the first and so far only vehicle that we have seen in the world of Arena. Basically you double click to get on it, then jump when you want to get off. Note that you do jump off pretty low, so you pretty much have to drop into the water and then climb onto the land, there is no height advantage gained from a boat. However, we move a lot faster on water when riding on a boat, allowing us to travel around much more efficiently. It also doesn't waste stamina, meaning we don't end up wasting a bunch from exploring one section of the river.

The boats do have some other oddities, such as the fact that saving on one and then loading will result in the boat sprite disappearing until you jump off it. Also note that it might allow you to get under enemies, meaning that you might jump off only to find yourself completely stuck. Also note that it pretty much feels the same as swimming with a sprite added to the front of you and a speed hack. I don't know what I expected, I guess a bit more bobbing and perhaps a different sound, though I guess it functions well enough. Though I do wish I could simply jump to a raised ledge instead of having to climb out after riding on the boat, those precious few seconds make dealing with Wraiths that much harder.

Eventually we work our way more and more north, killing stuff and riding the numerous boats found throughout the dungeon. At one point we even bump into the riddle door leading to the piece of the Staff of Chaos, though I decide to ignore it so I can get the exploration portion done first. By the end of this section, we have cleared most of the map of enemies, leaving only a few Wraiths that keep giving me difficulties on the various islands. We heal up and prepare to tackle these remaining foes.
