Let’s Play Ultima IX #09: And Now, a History Lesson
The world of Britannia has a long and deep history and while the influence the Avatar has had on pivotal points throughout it has been huge, we have only been there for brief moments. Many centuries of events have occurred while we were back on Earth or away on other world - not to mention the time before Mondain began his reign of terror in Sosaria – and so we often need to be filled in on what’s happened while we weren’t there. Usually that’s done through conversations with our companions, close friends and those who live in the towns the Avatar visits, but there are other mediums through which we can learn. Books are a popular choice in the series, but another is the museum of Britain.
Known as the Royal Museum in Ultima VI and VII, it is a repository of knowledge that the populace can visit to learn about their past. Exhibits on mythical creatures, powerful artefacts and tomes on events long past are assembled there, all free to access and appreciate. As time went on, more and more of the museum became dedicated to the previous adventures of the Avatar, including some displays that present a number of plot holes which the game is unlikely to answer.
While the museum goes some way to explaining events that occurred while the Avatar was away in Pagan, it also serves as another way for a player unfamiliar with the setting of Ultima to learn about the previous entries. As to why someone would decide to jump into Ultima IX when it’s the last of the mainline series is anyone's guess, though one could argue that it helps people understand the world of Ultima Online a little better as well. Either way, it’s nice to be able to take a moment to consider what has come before this adventure and remember the lessons learned from challenges past. Who knows, one of them might actually help us now in the present.
