Let’s Play Ultima IX #95: The Isle of the Avatar
We’ve done all we need to in the Valley of Souls, a place we shouldn’t really be able to access on account of the Well of Souls being destroyed in Ultima VII by the spirit of Horace sacrificing itself to free the trapped souls of Skara Brae. No explanation in-game is provided for why the Well of Souls returned but we’re glad it did, for it allowed Shamino to discover the truth about us and the Guardian, one which really shows off just how much the original plot was changed in the rushed rewrite of the plot to make the scope of the game far smaller. The original story – often dubbed the Bob White Plot – was exceptionally complicated and at times convoluted but it did the saga a lot more justice, tying in far better to what had come before. That plot is not the plot of this game, however, and so we must go forward with what we’ve learned being so and our next plan of action being… reckless, to say the least.
We’re off the Isle of the Avatar, a place we can find because of our inherent virtue and the fact that we’ve been there numerous times throughout the saga. A volcanic island, its surface has never been populated but the Stygian Abyss – a dangerous place that is typically accessed from the Isle of the Avatar – has been home to both the Gargoyles and the colony of Sir Cabirus in the past. It is also the home of the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, a book we still need to get back from Blackthorn. To do that we need to get into the Abyss but Lord British has blocked our access, so we’ve had to resort to summoning an entity that Shamino claims is native to the Abyss: Pyros.
I’m sure you remember Pyros, the titan of fire from Pagan that wanted to break free of its bonds and kill everyone on the island, the one we defeated and bound to a blackrock obelisk along with all the other titans so we could become the titan of ether. Apparently, he’s native to the abyss which makes you wonder whether Pagan had an abyss which was connected to the one on Britannia somehow. This is a terrible idea but we’re short on options and the Avatar has succeeded in binding Pyros before, albeit with the help of Malchir and his acolytes. Surely now we’ve the titan of ether, we should have no problem binding Pyros alone and getting him to transport us to the Stygian Abyss.
If you’re wondering whether this was part of the original plot, it wasn’t. In the original plot, we were meant to summon the Slasher of Veils from Ultima Underworld do to this for us. Yes, you read that right: The Slasher of Veils, the unkillable demon that couldn’t be negotiated with that wanted to get to Britannia to kill everyone that we only just managed to trap in the void. I don’t know about you but if I were forced to choose between Pyros and the Slasher of Veils, I’d go for the one I at least have a tiny chance of being able to negotiate with over the one that just wants to rip everyone to pieces. Arcadion, the demon once contained with the Black Sword, would have been a better choice plotwise but again, the plot is what it is.
