Let’s Play Ultima IX #96: The Stygian Abyss
148The Great Stygian Abyss is the most evil place in all Britannia. It is the antithesis of all that is good, opposing all the virtues simultaneously. Creatures of create evil inhabit the place and only those of great virtue have any hope of surviving there for long. What’s worse, it cannot be permanently destroyed, always returning after its destruction.
The Stranger travelled there with their companions during the Quest of the avatar in search of the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom. Normal weapons proved useless against the denizens of the artificially built dungeon which was sealed up by the Shrine of the Codex once the Avatar emerged. Sir Cabirus attempted to form a colony there, hoping that they could bring virtue to the evil place. Upon Cabirus’s death, however, the place quickly became a prison and from where the evil wizard Tyball experimented with powerful magic. The colony was lost to lava after the Avatar sealed the Slasher of Veils in the Ethereal Void but not before the denizens were rescued from the place.
The abyss may be a terrible place but it’s also connected to the shrine of spirituality and we need to cleanse that if we’re to have any hope of thwarting the Guardian. This means that the abyss is where the column housing the glyph of spirituality will be and it’s here that Blackthorn hoped to confront the Avatar one last time. Lord British uncovered the letter of challenge first, however, deciding to finally take action and deal with Blackthorn himself. We must move quickly if we’re to ensure our liege is safe but there’s the tiny matter of navigating the abyss first, a place that has undergone some serious changes since we were last there and is now focused on the four elements. Considering our recent defeat of the elemental titans of Pagan, perhaps this area was originally meant to be fragments of their domain, possibly leading to rematches against them. That is not what is here, however, so let’s get to solving some puzzles and forgetting to pick up an item I really want that I’m going to have to go back and get later.
