Let’s Play Black Mesa #15: This Plot is On Rails
This is a blind playthrough. Kindly avoid posting spoilers in the comments or solutions to puzzles either in this video or future ones so as not to spoil the experience for me or those that haven’t seen the game before.
For all the things that have been altered and changed in this remake, the plot has remained unchanged and it’s a very linear one. Sure, there are tiny little things you can do differently – some side path lead to goodies and there are scientists and guards you can save if you’re quick witted enough – but there’s no way to slip chapters and no way for them to end any differently every time you play through the game. Those that have played more recent games where you have far more freedom and the ability to steer the plot in certain directions through your actions may find themselves disappointed by this but you should always try to keep in mind that back when this game came out linear was the name of the game for first person shooters. Deus Ex was a huge mould breaker when it was released and even that is more linear than you think it is.
That aside, we’re fast approaching the old tunnels that the scientist earlier told us about and while we could walk our way through them, time is certainly of the essence. It’s a good thing then that there’s a handy rail system deep under Black Mesa that’ll drastically cut down our travel time, provided of course we can get it working. Honestly, I’m surprised we still have power to most of the facility after what’s happened, let alone a functioning rail system, so I’ve got few complaints apart from all the aliens and marines wanting to kill me.
