Let's Play Ultima VIII Extra #02: Ruining Rituals, Avatar Style

The Ritual of Flame is a dangerous thing to do as it brings forth Pyros, the titan of fire so that the master of the sorcerers can ask of his knowledge or draw upon his power. The titan has little patience and no desire to be forthcoming with wisdom or magic but is bound to the Tongue of Flame, an item of great magical power. The spells that keep the titan bound are not infallible however and during the Ritual of Flame the titan can and often does attempt to break free. Only through the strength of the acolytes that summon him and the ritual being formed correctly do they have a hope of containing the destructive force that is Pyros.
Unfortunately the sorcerers didn't count on the Avatar becoming an acolyte. Though his affinity with magic is great, his knowledge of the Ritual of Flame is not and so he is a weakness that Pyros can exploit in his efforts to break free. Failure to follow the Ritual of Flame correctly has consequences like the one shown in the previous video where Malchir couldn't draw all the magic he wanted to. There are more dire consequences however, ranging from the death of the first acolyte to Pagan's worst nightmare: Pyro's freedom which would signal the end of all life in the world.
It's important for the Avatar to either follow the Ritual of Flame precisely or refuse to participate very early on, for the consequences of the failing the former are dire indeed. As for the latter, the Avatar will earn the ire of Malchir which leads to him trying to kill you. It's perfectly possible to defeat him however and should you do so, the game continues without Pyros being summoned at all. Some might say this is a more desired outcome but at this point we don't know if Malchir can help us save Tenabrae from the wrath of Hydros and most would see combat starting and reload to before the ritual began. However you decide to deal with the Ritual of Flame, caution is advised for it's not just the Avatar that suffers is things go wrong.
