Though you may not realise it, the game has been sprinkling in little bits of worldbuilding from day one. The announcements on the tannoy systems, demonstration videos, e-mails and audio logs have all been trickling both tidbits about life in Mars City and the experiments which led to the disaster we’ve been battling through. All of this combined with the living people we encounter along the way adds up to quite a substantial plot which you don’t realise you’re experiencing until you’re knee-deep in it.
As we reach the latter parts of the game, we’re coming across information not just about the demons that now infest the facility but the race that called Mars its home so long ago. There’s the usual stuff that you expect to see in a game like this – they were super advanced and could very be the precursors to us – plus a not-so-subtle hint as to how we’re going to be saving humanity ourselves. You may think the answer to that is ‘with our huge arsenal’ and to that I’ll just say you’re partly right.
