Let’s Replay Doom II #09: Stepping Back in Time
For those that have played earlier games made by id, the secret levels are a blast from the past. The first is a recreation of the very first level of Wolfenstein 3D while the second is a recreation of the final level of the first episode of the game. Both have an aesthetic, music and even an enemy unique to these levels. The levels have been made to look a lot like the game they’re from and the foe being a re-imagining of one of the foes from Wolfenstein 3D. Alone they’re not that dangerous, but on higher difficulties they’re encountered in groups of four. Their weapons are hit scan, rapid firing and capable of dealing decent damage if you’re not wearing armour, meaning that a large group of them can quickly defeat you if you underestimate them.
If you remember the first level of Wolfenstein 3D there won’t be many surprises for you here, but there is a secret or two that have been added for this re-imagining of the level. The boss level doesn’t have the opponent I would’ve liked to see, but it’s still an enemy that you shouldn’t underestimate. If you’re careful you can leave the secret levels with a lot more ammunition then you entered them with as well as all the fun you had going through them, of which there’s a lot to be had. It’s nice that this game pays homage to the one of the ones that laid the foundation for it to exist and though it can be difficult to gain access to these levels, it’s worth it for the nostalgia alone.
