Let's Replay X-COM UFO Defence #12: Delivering the Eviction Notice
Attacking an alien base is very different compared to a UFO or a terror mission. First, your squad is split between two entrances and might not be able to regroup quickly. Second, the base has few places to take cover and patches with little illumination, making the positioning of your soldiers even more important than normal. Add to that the presence of terror units and you've got a tricky mission indeed, one that requires careful strategy if you're going to succeed without losing lots of soldiers. Taking it slow is important, but if the aliens are capable of psionic attacks you'll want to deal with them quickly, which means moving quicker than you'd like.
Even if psionic attacks happen, the last thing you want to do is rush into the base. Securing the immediate area around the elevators in is the first priority, after which your soldiers should systematically search the base for the command centre. It's that which you need to neutralise to take out the base, as well as the alien leader who's leading the people stationed there. Taking that alien out will seriously weaken their morale, plus they're the one most likely to be psionic. Mind controlled soldiers are easy enough to subdue if you need to and it's best you do, as the alternative is you either killing them or them killing some of your other soldiers before you have to kill them anyway.
The first alien base is where your skills as a commander will be most tested, even more than the first terror mission. The first terror mission almost always goes bad because you're poorly equipped and you're forced to react to it, but an alien base is attacked only on your order. If you can take it out with minimal casualties on your side, the reward in points and loot is fantastic, but don't be too hasty to take them out before you're ready. That said, you can't afford to keep them there forever, so by the same token don't let them linger for months on end if you can take them out with relative ease, unless you're farming the supply vessels.
This video was originally two videos which I decided to put together as one, as I felt the single resulting video flowed better. If you notice a somewhat jarring cut where the POV of the camera change, that is the reason.
