Some would look at the string of successes that X-COM has had and think that we have the aliens on the run. They’d ponder that the aliens are afraid to send their UFOs to Earth, for they know that we’ll shoot them down with ease and clear up the crash site without a problem. Others may even believe that the squad have finally grown stronger than the invading aliens, an unstoppable force to be reckoned with who’ll steam-roll the rest of the game and emerge not only victorious but bereft of casualties.

This is folly, folly that will get you killed.

X-COM is not a kind game. Sometimes you’ll be lucky but more often than not, you’re not. If you go into a mission believing that you’re unstoppable, that’s exactly what you won’t be. Someone once said that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer and in this game, that’s entirely correct. Hubris will make you make mistakes, rush in too quickly and without consideration for the foes around you. Pride is no replacement for good tactics and cover, nor will it guide your shots to the foes you wish to slay. If I’d concluded from my past victories that nothing could stop me now, I’d end up stopping myself through terrible decisions made due to that mindset.

This is the reason why I’m so careful. Even when it seems like there’s no foes, even when there seem to be so few foes. I know the levels of sneakiness the game is capable of and I know that the moment I forget about that and think X-COM is cutting me a break, it’ll fire a blaster bomb into the middle of my squad and remind me that it’s a cold, uncaring game that seeks to crush me. I cannot and will not let it do that, not without a fight at the very least.
