No matter the size of the UFO you’re dealing with, being methodical will both save you time and reduce the chance that aliens will sneak up on you. It won’t entirely eliminate it of course, as most of the rooms in the alien UFOs have multiple entrances, but taking your time really is the best piece of advice that anyone can be given when going into this game. Rushing into any situation will get you into a world of trouble and large UFOs like a battleship are no exception; the last thing you want to be is in an alien crossfire that’ll leave nothing of your squad at the end of it.

Being able to clear out a battleship from the top floor downwards reduces the chance that we’ll be surprised, not to mention we can deal with the more dangerous aliens first. The other advantage is that we prevent aliens sneaking up on us from a higher floor as hopefully we’ll have dealt with all of them. I can’t guarantee of course without going through each and every room and making sure, but X-COM is rarely about certainties and more reducing risk.
