Here's my Let's Try of the Alpha Demo of Q-YO Blaster, a 2D ('90s style) retro side scrolling shoot-em-up currently in development by Team Robot Black Hat. This demo (V0.4) contains three levels. According to the Kickstarter, this title is estimated to come out around Late 2017.

In this title, you take on the role of a genius guinea pig, a robotic girl with rocket boots, or an anthropomorphic plane. Your goal is to fly through several stages to push back an invading army of insects from space, and save the earth.

At the beginning of the game, you have a choice among five special powers, each with their own attributes. Each special power can be charged up to three levels by collecting the coins dropped from fallen enemies, with each level increasing the resultant power. The power level drops to 0 upon usage though. Thankfully, you can store up to three pulse bombs at a time, which when used, will convert all bullets on-screen into coins - meaning it allows for a moment of levity, and can also potentially refill your special power gauge to max.

In the levels themselves, you'll be able to pickup several weapons that are superior to your base one, but limited in ammo. At the end of each level, you have the option of upgrading your weapon, one of your ships attributes, or something else.

The pixel-art is nice to look at, but I would like a little more detail put into it. At least the enemy shots are easy to differentiate from the background.

Otherwise overall, I enjoyed my short time with this game. The controls are responsive, and the gameplay feels fair. Though, hard mode should be more challenging outside of the third boss. It certainly feels like a solid '90s-style side-scrolling SHMUP. But, time will tell how good the final product will be.
