I picked this game up from the Racial Justice bundle from itch.io.

You're a Witch that want's to steal a super evil book because why the hell not. That's it. That's the plot. You traverse levels shooting mobs that spawn in your way in segmented steps.As you murder things, there are occasional drops to change your weapon type, or upgrade the one you're using. Pretty straight-forward bullet hell stuff.

The big twist is not that you're some adorable-yet-prickly witch, but that this is a bullet hell played with an over-the-shoulder camera. It's a ... very different experience, and boy oh boy does it take some getting used to. Honestly the camera decisions are probably the worst thing about this game. If the camera gets pinned behind you - say against a wall - it pulls up tight behind your character, but doesn't change it's depth of field. This causes everything to get extremely bloomy and extremely out of focus.

I am as surprised as anyone to find out how much I actually ended up enjoying Witch Thief by the end of my playthrough. I admit that it's far from perfect (maxed out auto-rockets are broken as heck) and when you lose, boy does it feel like a punishment. That aside, I dove right back in every time, and got better and learned something every run. That's a good thing with any shmup. Despite my rocky start with Witch Thief, I think I'll return to it again.
