Let's Upgrade Our Streaming Microphone With The Maono PD200X
32I am a big proponent of making sure they're not only do you look good when you are creating videos for people to consume, but that you sound good as well. This can be quite a challenge, especially if you're utilizing a smartphone as your camera for creating content. thankfully, the team at mono just sent us their new PD200X XLR and USB boom stand and podcaster microphone to check out. To say I am excited would be an understatement.
One of the issues you will often run into in regards to connecting a podcaster style mic into a computer or into a smartphone is the fact that many of them often need their own phantom power supply. thankfully, the PD 200 X does not and can be powered directly off of USB from any smartphone. And this video here, I connected it to my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and it worked perfectly from the word go. That's very exciting.
One of the cool things is you can get this as a microphone itself or as a combo with a scissors arm too. They sent me the unit that was a two-in-one with the mic and the boom, and in all it took me less than 3 minutes to set everything up and have it recording to my phone. This is a really easy to set up in utilize Mic. add in the ability to connect via either USB cable or an XLR connection to go into a mixer and there's a lot of versatility here.
On the microphone itself you have a number of interesting features. You can actually utilize the headphone output that is built into the microphone as a monitor, making it much easier for you to talk to others and listen to them at the same time. There's also an independent volume level which I will be using in the future as I felt the levels, if anything, were a little bit hot. There's also an RGB light around the body of the microphone that you can toggle between different colors.
One thing it won't take a little bit of time for me to get used to is speaking into the end of the microphone versus speaking into the side on my previous mic. Even dating back to when I was in radio I spoke into the side of the microphone. so this will take me a little bit of adjusting, but overall I'm pretty happy with this setup.
