The Retrotink 5x & 4K Are an Explosive Upscaling Combination!
While I was working on my RetroTink 4K review, one thing kept crawling at the back of my head. And no, it wasn't a bug. I wanted to know what a signal would look like if I upscaled it first through the Retrotink 5X and then through the Retrotink 4K. would it look good? would they be compatible with each other? I decided to find out because I thought the results could be explicitly amazing.
One of the cool things about the Retrotink 4K is that it actually utilizes an HDMI input. that means systems such as the Wii u, Xbox 360, Xbox One S, and even the PlayStation 3 and 4 can have their content upscaled from 720p, 1080p, and other resolutions to 4K. In addition, you can also hook up component video cables, composite video cables, S-Video, VGA, and RGB SCART. I grabbed an HDMI cable and decided to put this to the test.
On the Retrotink 5x, I set the video output to 1080p. From here, I connected up my Super Nintendo Junior which had been RGB modded with Voultar's excellent RGB mod kit, a NEStoration no cut region free mod kit so I can play Super Famicom games on it, and HD retrovision component video cables.
With the signal coming out of the 5X and into the 4K, I have to admit the results were absolutely beautiful. The images were clean and crisp, they looked absolutely stunning. I've actually done quite a bit of testing already with this combination and will have footage featuring this setup coming in my review. I would say if you already own a RetroTink 5x and are going to pick up a RetroTink 4x, you'll definitely want to him them up together! The results were amazing!
